KINDERGARTEN
The Kindergarten program offers a modified Montessori program
that lends itself to individualized instruction which provides a
readiness program to meet the strengths and improve the weaknesses of
each child. Traditional classroom teaching methods are also used.
The Montessori materials provide a rich, sensorial approach with
hands-on activities in each of the three classroom divisions—Practical Life, Math and Language Arts. The Language Arts program is phonics based, uses the Open Court reading series and includes recognition of letters, ability to discriminate sounds, and blending. D’Nealian Handwriting is taught to provide an easier transition into cursive writing later. The Mathematics program emphasizes number recognition to 100 as well as counting objects and counting aloud to 100. Number sequence is included. Other areas include counting money, telling time, place value, addition, subtraction, and fractions. The Practical Life program teaches care of oneself (buttoning, zipping, lacing) and care of the home and school environment (sweeping, setting the table, scrubbing the table, etc.) Fine motor skills are emphasized. Cooking projects, science experiments, woodworking and creative art are included. Art, Music, Library Science, Physical Education, Creative Movement, Spanish, Hands on Science, and Computer are taught by specialty teachers. The Kindergarten hours are 8:15 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. daily (12:30 dismissal for the first four weeks only). Classes are limited to 13 students per teacher.
