LOWER SCHOOL
The educational program in the Lower School, grades one through
four, emphasizes the attainment of academic skills as well as the
development of specific abilities, attitudes, and work habits.
The program is designed to meet the students’ individual needs
as well as to challenge them to reach their potential.
Much of the student’s time is spent acquiring language and
number skills.
The Open Court reading series, in grades one through four, is
used because of its strong phonetic approach and use of classic literature.
The Harcourt Brace series is used in mathematics because of the
results it delivers in building understanding, problem solving skills,
and computational competence. Computer
Mathematics is used also, where the emphasis is on computation. In addition to these very vital areas of concentration, the
students study science, social studies, spelling, and English.
To complement the core curriculum and to broaden the scope of the
student’s education, special classes are integrated into the weekly
studies. These classes
include: Drama, Music, Spanish, Art, Computer, Physical Education, Library, and
Hands-On Science. These
classes are taught by specialty teachers.
Each Lower School classroom has a computer attached to a Smart
Board for enhanced curriculum options.
The computer programs are correlated with the subject matter
taught at each grade level.
To provide extra practice and enrichment, each classroom has both
SRA reading and math labs. This
allows for work on an individualized basis at the student’s own level.
Parents receive report cars every nine weeks (fourth grade
reports are issued every six weeks), and parent
conferences are scheduled with the first and final report card.
Additionally, parents or teachers may initiate conferences at any
time the need may arise.
The school day begins at 8:15 a.m. and ends at 2:50 p.m.
