SPECIAL PROGRAMS

EXTENDED CARE PROGRAM

The Extended Care Program was established for children in preschool through the sixth grade whose parents need supervision for their children beyond the regular school day.  It offers a safe, nurturing transition between school and home.  The atmosphere is relaxed, activities are available and guidelines are fair.  There is time for talking with friends, playing indoor games, having fun outdoors, or sitting quietly to hear or read a book.  Homework sessions are supervised and a snack is provided in the afternoon.

Before school extended day begins at 7:30 a.m. and after school extended care ends at 6:00 p.m.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

As part of their social and moral development, students are encouraged to become involved in the affairs of their community.  It is strongly believed that service to others is an important part of becoming a caring and responsible adult.

In the Lower and Middle Schools community service projects are organized by classes.  In the Upper School community service projects are individually selected.

In order to graduate from Greenfield School, each student must accumulate a minimum of ten hours of community service per year for each year in the Upper School.

EDUCATIONAL FIELD TRIPS

Annual trips to New York, Old Salem, Williamsburg, New Bern, Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill complement specific learning areas.  Field trips are taken yearly at each grade level to extend the classroom experience.

REQUIRED SUMMER READING

Rising second through twelfth graders are expected to read selections from a reading list during the summer.  At upper grade levels certain books are required of all students as the selections complement specific curriculum objectives.

LANGUAGE THERAPY PROGRAM

Greenfield’s Language Therapy Program is designed to aid students who have a diagnosed language disability and need to learn the English language in a different way.  This program is intended to add to the overall enrichment of the school curriculum.

NO-CUT POLICY IN ATHLETICS

Greenfield School believes being a member of an athletic team is important to the development of total education; therefore, any student in grade seven through twelve may represent Greenfield School on a school athletic team.  Over 90% of the students in grade seven through twelve participate in at least one sport yearly.

SUMMER CAMPS

Greenfield School sponsors a variety of camps on campus during the summer.  Camps are available for all ages.  Some camps are academically oriented while other camps are sports related.

PARENT ORGANIZATIONS

Greenfield Volunteer Organization (GVO): A volunteer parent group performs various services for the school.  Membership is open to all parents.

Booster Club: Parents and friends of the school help support the athletic program.  The Booster Club operates the concession stand at home soccer and basketball games.  Membership is open to all parents.
