Kindergarten

The kindergarten at Greenfield School offers a  program using traditional teaching and Montessori activities.  The Montessori activities reinforce our program that meets the strengths and improves the weaknesses of each child.  Our  Montessori program provides a rich, sensorial, creative approach to learning.  With our hands–on activities we emphasize order, concentration, organization, and independence.  Our instructional time is divided into 3 areas – Language Arts, Math and Practical Life.

Our Language Arts program is phonics based which includes letter recognition, the ability to discriminate sounds, and blending.  Reading and writing skills are introduced and reinforced with an Open Court guide and workbook.  In our writing program we utilize the Empowering Writer’s philosophy for emergent writer’s which lays the groundwork for successful writing.  We also use D’Nealian  handwriting which will make the transition to cursive easier in the second grade.  

The Math Room emphasizes number recognition, number sequence and counting to 100.  Shape recognition, counting money, telling time, place value, addition, subtraction and fractions are introduced.  In addition to our kindergarten Harcourt math workbook we use many other supplementary resources to reinforce our program.  For instance we adopted Math Superstars that enhances problem solving skills and self thought.  Our Montessori math activities reinforce all skills learned and provide sensorial discrimination.

Our Practical Life program enhances fine motor and self help skills through Montessori activities.  Cooking projects, science experiments, woodworking, US geography and creative arts are included.

Science, social studies, and US geography, unit studies, {including dinosaurs, dental health, the body (anatomy), nutrition, insects, space, and sea creatures} are incorporated throughout our program.

Students participate in art, music, library, physical education, hands on science, computer and creative movement weekly.  Spanish is taught for twenty minutes, twice a week and they attend Physical Education for 30 minutes daily.
