Language Therapy Center
In 1986, Dr. Lucia Karnes, an internationally recognized authority on dyslexia and learning disorders, trained our first Greenfield Language Therapists in the Orton-Gillingham approach and supervised the start of our Language Center for many years. Students accepted in the program must be diagnosed by a licensed psychologist. The Orton Approach is a structured phonetic multi-sensory tutoring which is provided in a one to one setting. Recent research using brain scans and magnetic resonance imaging supports the fact that only multisensory structural methods actually rewire the brain for success in reading and written language.
Students learn phonemic awareness which is the ability to think and work with the sounds of spoken words. This provides the foundation for reading and spelling while phonics teaches them the predictable use of graphemes in written language. Vocabulary, fluency, reading comprehension, and test taking skills are imporved using specific strategies. The length of time in the program varies from two to four years depending on the needs of individual students. Over the years our students have inspired us by their hard work, determination, and academic achievements.
