Community Service Required

Good students are good citizens and good citizens participate in the community in which they live.  With this is mind, Greenfield has a community service requirement of all Upper School students.  Each student in grades 9-12 must volunteer at least 10 hours a year in order to graduate.

Students may finish their mandated hours in the summer, after school or on weekends. The service time begins after the eighth grade ends and hours are due the day the student enters each grade, 10-12. Some just do the minimum required, but many devote many hours to projects to which they have become deeply committed.  This sense of commitment has enriched the students, the school and the agencies which have benefited from their efforts.

Students’ service work has been varied.  Some have helped their friends with scout projects, while others have assisted with camps or sports programs for young children at the Recreation Center or the Y.  Some have taken the initiative to head up their own projects or have a continued relationship with a non-profit organization.

One student heard of a group of local physicians going to Central America on a mission trip and collected shoes for them to take to those who would be treated.  One of this year’s seniors has spent more than 300 hours working at “For the Love of Dogs,” a local pet shelter.  The Salvation Army, Red Cross, and other United Way Agencies have benefited from Greenfield service hours.

Jessie Jones Receives Praise for Acting

Senior Jesse Jones received rave reviews for her performance last weekend in a play at Barton College.  Jesse played the title character, Sylvia, a dog who changes the lives of a couple who adopt her.

Wilson Daily Times editor and drama critic Hal Tarleton said her performance was the highlight of the show.  She was amazing as she romped over the stage on all fours and blended canine and human traits with ease.   Jesse has been accepted in the drama department at Greensboro College for next fall.
