Practicing lab safety in science class!

Last week, our 5th and 6th graders attempted to solve a series of clues and "escape the classroom" using lab safety.  This is very similar to the idea of breakout/escape rooms, but in order to solve each clue, students must demonstrate a mastery of the lab safety content.  Students puzzled through safety equipment, signs, functions of equipment and lab rules in order to solve the clues.  6th graders tried to solve 8 clues in the 45 minutes, 5th graders only had to solve 6 clues.  Students learned collaboration, teamwork and used lots of higher order thinking skills in order to be able to solve the clues.  Students could choose to participate in the post-game photos and were allowed to choose their own signs.
