After School Enrichment (ASE)
ACTIVITIES
Theatre:
As part of new offerings in our After School Enrichment, we are having special programs for our students throughout each month. Mr. Penwell works with students on puppetry! Students are able to use their own hand puppets to learn techniques used in theater to bring puppets to life and to create the illusion of puppets talking. Students have fun both acting out their own scenes and singing songs from our upcoming productions.
In Covey Denton's STEM camp students 1st learned about acid/base reactions by hatching baby dinosaur eggs. The eggs were made of baking soda and water, frozen solid, and our pink liquid was a mixture of white vinegar and red cabbage juice. Red cabbage contains a pigment that is an indicator—pink in acid and purple/blue in a base. Our reactions bubbled and fizzed, the chemical changed colors, and the baby dinosaurs inside the eggs were revealed! The students also learned about eye protection and how to use a pipette.
Community Involvement:
Throughout the year, our students participate in a variety of community engagement experiences that strengthen meaningful connections beyond the classroom. These events include special visits from EMS, the fire department, and local police—including K-9 units—as well as opportunities to interact with Barton College athletic teams, such as the women’s basketball team.
