Theater

Theater At Greenfield

Greenfield School is proud to offer a theater program! Our program is one of the only programs offered inside schools in Wilson County. What began as a spring play for middle and upper school students has quickly grown into multiple opportunities in grades K-12. In just 5 short years, we have added both an upper school drama club, upper school Theater I and Theater II classes, and a fall musical for 1st-5th grades. We believe this is only the beginning and cannot wait to see how our program grows! We are thrilled to be able to offer these theatrical opportunities to our students and look forward to you joining us throughout the year as our students perform and learn the art of theater.

Performances

For each production, students experience the entire process of performing in a show, from auditions to final dress rehearsals. Students spend 6 weeks rehearsing for 3-4 days on campus and spend their final days of rehearsal at the theater. They put in countless hours to perfect their performance. We are thrilled to be able to perform at the Edna Boykin Cultural Center! Performing at this venue gives our students an opportunity to experience what it is like in a working theater that holds performances all year long.

Rehearsals culminate in two performances for each show that are open to the public. We currently have two productions planned per year: a fall musical for 1st-5th grades and a spring play for 6th-12th grades.

Theater I

Theater is all about storytelling, from the script to the set. This class is an exploration of the different aspects of theater and developing and performing a show. We explore how all elements of a show, including acting, lights, costumes, and set, work together to tell the story. By the end of course, students have a basic understanding of several main areas: acting, technical theater, writing, and directing. They learn how to put these ideas into practice in small

scenes in class as well as writing small scripts. Students use what they have learned to help put on our spring play. They are either actors or members of the tech crew and are integral parts to the performance.

Theater II

Theater II is a unique offering in which students who have completed the Theater I course can put what they learned last year into real-world practice. Students start the year by being student directors, choreographers, stage managers, and technical directors for our fall lower school production. They are truly able to take ownership of the show and create a performance that will be shared with our school and community. They spend the rest of the year assisting with the spring play and working on small performances of their own to continue to develop their understanding of theater and how to create a production from start to finish.
